Blairex Broncho Saline No Longer Available

In February 2007, Blairex Laboratories decided to no longer manufacture or sell Broncho Saline; unfortunately, news of this discontinuance was slow to emerge.  In fact, a courteous patient brought this news to our attention in April; a call to Blairex’s customer service department confirmed the matter.  Transtracheal Systems immediately began searching for a comparable replacement.  Alternative sources have been identified and replacement product is under evaluation; target date for availability is July/August 2007.

In the interim, any source of saline can be used to irrigate the SCOOP catheter.  Many patients revert to the plastic saline vials often used with nebulizer treatments.  It is important that such vials fit snugly into the SCOOP catheter hub so that a good squeeze instills approximately 2-3 cc’s of saline into the catheter.  Some patients purchase a larger bottle of saline (usually 250 ml) and draw-up the saline into a 5 cc syringe; the syringe is then connected to the SCOOP catheter hub and the saline instilled into the catheter.

Rest assured, Transtracheal Systems is both working to minimize the negative impact of Blairex’s decision to withdraw Broncho Saline from the shelves and to provide suitable replacement product as rapidly as possible.  Check back frequently as we will announce the new product here, once available. Thank you for your patience and support during this process.

Families with special needs children often find it difficult to obtain information related to caring for the needs of such children and to network with other families in similar circumstances.  For families with children requiring tracheostomy tubes, one website can prove particularly helpful. Aaron's Tracheostomy Page (click the title to open the page in a separate window) is an invaluable resource; this site provides both information and networking opportunities for families who experience the challenges and rewards of loving and caring for children with tracheostomies.
