A letter from Pat
Chesebro:
My name is Pat Chesebro, I am 72 years old, my liter flow is 1 1/2 at night and 4 during
the day. I am quite Active! I have been using the transtracheal catheter since
1988, that's 10 1/2 years! It not only puts the O2 where it is needed (my
lungs) but allowed me to continue working as a Realtor for many years. I don't have
that thing [nasal cannula] hanging on my face so others are not distracted. I can
even talk and laugh without having to stop and breathe. It really is efficient, easy
and comfortable.
A telephone interview with 62 year
old transtracheal oxygen user Jimmy Keeling:
| Q. How long have
you been using transtracheal oxygen? |
|
Jimmy: 10
years |
| Q. Has it improved
your quality of live? How? |
|
Jimmy:
Yes! It's easier to maintain my saturation levels and I don't have to have a cannula
in my nose. |
| Q. Has using
transtracheal oxygen changed your activity level? |
|
Jimmy: Yes
again! I can now swim laps in my pool during the summer. |
| Q. What problems
did you have with your nasal cannula before you switched to the transtracheal catheter? |
|
Jimmy:
Dryness and discomfort! |
| Q. What was your
liter flow on the cannula? and what is it now that you use SCOOP? |
|
Jimmy: I went
from 2 1/2 lpm on my cannula to 3/4 lpm with my SCOOP catheter. |
| Q. Why did you switch? |
|
Jimmy: My
physicians and other transtracheal catheter users convinced me this was, and still is, the
best way to receive supplemental oxygen |
| Q. How hard is it to maintain your
catheter? How much time do you spend on cleaning? |
|
Jimmy: Very
easy, I spend very minimal time cleaning (probably 10-15 minutes per day).
Especially for all the benefits I receive! |
| Q. Would you ever switch back to a
nasal cannula? |
|
Jimmy: NO
SIR! |
| Q. What advice to
you have for supplemental oxygen patients who are considering switching from their nasal
cannula to SCOOP transtracheal oxygen? |
|
Jimmy: I
would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be more active, and is willing to keep a
positive attitude and the right state of mind. |
